A Romance in 2-Dimensions
Joanna Lamb, September 2026
Taking their starting point from an accumulated digital collection of personal photographs of built and landscaped environments gathered over many years, these paintings draw on memories of place evoked through revisiting the collection. Respecting the flattened picture plane and the autonomy of colour, they are developed through self-imposed parameters that reduce the painting process to an arrangement of flat, coloured shapes, establishing colour as the primary organising principle of the work.
The loss of information and context through digitisation creates space for the inflection of personal memory. As lived experience is translated into a photograph, a photograph into a digital image, a digital image into a drawing, and a drawing into a painting, each stage relinquishes descriptive certainty while opening new possibilities for recollection and interpretation. The resulting images hover between collapse and solidity, ambiguity and clarity. Colour anchors the work, becoming the vehicle for reconstructing memory and inviting viewers to locate their own associations with place.
Painting’s labour and duration resist the effortless circulation of digital images. Rather than recovering the original photograph, the work re-embeds the image within a history of its own making, restoring a material presence accumulated through time and process.
